This is Isla

Are we ready for another dog?

Isla joined our crew in August of 2018. We had just lost Wiggs, one of our previous border collies, a couple of weeks prior. That left Rex and Niang the cat.

A local rescue site had just posted a litter of puppies that they had rescued from Texas. The rescue had brought the momma dog and her pups to their rescue facility and the puppies were ready for adoption.

Did we want to get another dog this soon? Rex was doing okay on his own. And adopting a rescue can be quite a bit of work, let alone if we decide to adopt a puppy or young dog. Did we want to take that on yet?

I showed the puppy pictures to my husband. He commented that if we went to see them, we would want to bring one home. I took that as meaning he was interested in them. It can’t hurt to fill out an application, I thought. And I did not think we would hear back quickly or else the puppies would be gone by the time we heard back. So, I filled out the application not really thinking it would go anywhere.

We are approved to meet a pup!

Surprise! After pushing this to the back of my mind, I received an email. We passed the initial application scan, and it is time to schedule a home visit. Now it is time to tell my husband I filled out the application and get the visit scheduled.

Shortly after this, a volunteer was at our house for a visit. Rex was not on his best behavior during the first part of the visit. There is a stranger in our house! As she was a stranger, Rex barked at her continuously while she checked out our backyard. Things did go a bit better with him once she was in the house. After about half an hour, she left. At that point we were in waiting mode. Would the rescue approve us? With Rex barking at her for the first half of the visit, we were not sure what to expect.

Rex must not have phased her by his barking, as we heard back quickly. The rescue approved us to adopt a puppy! Now it was time to set up a meet and greet with the Texas puppies. Two days later, with Rex in tow, we headed out to their facility to meet the puppies.

We meet Killeen

There were two puppies available from the litter when we arrived – a male and a female. Rex seemed to do better with females, so we took him into the meeting room and the three of us the little female, Killeen. We let them sniff and get acclimated to each other. Rex did great with her, and it did not take long to fall in love.

After getting the necessary paperwork filled out, we came home with Killeen (All of the puppies had been given names of Texas cities since they had come from Texas).

Isla is home

Killeen did not seem to be a fitting name for her, so it was time to pick a name. We talked about different names and decided on Isla (Eye-la). It is the name of a Scottish island and means island in Spanish. I am not sure why, but it seemed like a fitting name for her.

Isla and Rex hit it off right away. And she learned so many things very quickly. We were surprised that she followed Rex right through the doggie door that first day.

Miss Isla is very smart and sassy and has her crazy moments. Although she is the one that is sane and grounded. Her personality continues to develop every day. She hopes you are excited to hear about her adventures. And to hear all about any ideas you use to help keep your crew sane.
